Perth is fortunate to have one of WA’s most popular recreational islands only a short ferry trip away:RottnestThe ferry from Fremantle to Rottnest Island took us about thirty minutes. It was an enjoyable ride to the island as the shallow waters around Fremantle were beautifully coloured. On arrival at Rottnest we took a bus ride around the island. One of the outstanding features of this island are the emerald hued bays. Due to the many reefs surrounding the island, the water level varies in depth. On a clear blue day the waters are magnificently coloured. The beach sands are white, making a stark contrast. On the way around the island the bus stopped to allow people on and off at the various bays and beaches. There was also a special stop when a quokka made an appearance. I had heard that the island was called Rottnest because the sailors who first came here spotted the quokka and thought it was a large rat. So I was really surprised to see the sweetest little marsupial standing up on its hind legs eating food from one of the attendants on the island. It was a delight to watch and everyone on the bus was excited to see the quokka as they are basically nocturnal animals and often are not seen until dusk or later. We didn't manage to get a photo of the quokka so I have taken one from another site and recommend you go to this site to find out more about quokkas and Rottnest Island. Click here for more information on quokkas.
We intended to spend another full day at Rottnest, hire bikes and ride around and photograph the many beautiful emerald bays and hopefully some quokkas, but I ended up with a head cold and did not feel like pedalling around the island. Looks like we will have to return to Western Australia soon. |
